Lately we have been receiving a slew of emails on how to find the best resveratrol supplement. We obviously believe that a great resveratrol supplement needs to have Muscadine Grapes in the formula, but there is much more to it than just muscadines. In this article we will provide some questions you can ask to help you find the best resveratrol supplements.

Want the Best Resveratrol Supplement – Ask the Right Questions

If you want a resveratrol supplement that is going to be effective and free of side effects, you need to ask the right questions. Here is our quick list -

1. Is it Made with 99% Pure Trans-Resveratrol?

There is Trans-Resveratrol and Cis-Resveratrol. Then there is 50%, 75%, 98% and 99% Resveratrol. Yes, all these terms can be VERY confusing. In the end, you simply want to find a formula that is made only with 99% Pure Trans-Resveratrol. Resveratrol supplements that are NOT made with 99% Pure Trans-Resveratrol can have Emodin – a nasty little substance that can cause side effects.

If you are interested in learning more about all the different forms of resveratrol – here is a great article.

2. Are Any fillers or Flowing Agents Used in the Formula?

You are looking to take resveratrol, not a bunch of inactive ingredients that are used as fillers or flowing agents. Look at the “Other Ingredients” in the Supplement Facts panel. You do NOT want to see things like: magnesium stearate, silica, rice or anything else. You want to find a Resveratrol supplement that is really just Resveratrol.

3. Do they Clearly List the Amount of 99% Trans-Resveratrol on the Label?

By looking at the Supplement Facts panel you should be able to clearly see exactly how much 99% Trans-Resveratrol you are getting per serving. You do NOT want to see “Proprietary Blends” – this just makes it impossible to know how much 99% Trans-Resveratrol you are getting. In addition, you want to see at least 175mg of 99% Pure Trans-Resveratrol per serving.

4. Is it made with Whole Food Muscadine Grapes?

As you know from this website, we believe Muscadine Grapes are one of the healthiest foods in the world. 40x the antioxidants of red grapes, 6x the Resveratrol, more fiber than oat bran and the only grape with Ellagic Acid – clearly the best resveratrol supplements will be made with muscadine grapes. Make sure the supplement is made with muscadine skin, muscadine pulp and muscadine seed – as all parts of the muscadine grape have valuable nutrients.

Taking what we have learned from Questions 1-4 here is an example of a high quality Resveratrol Supplements -

Example of High Quality Resveratrol Supplement Label

The above label clearly lists 99% Trans-Resveratrol and Muscadine Grapes. No fillers or flowing agents are used. The exact amount of 99% Trans-Resveratrol per serving is clearly stated.

On the other hand, here is an example of a LOW Quality Resveratrol Supplement….

Example of Low Quality Resveratrol Supplement

The above Resveratol supplement has LOTS of problems! The exact amount of Resveratrol is unknown – hidden in a proprietary formula. We do not know if it is Trans-Resveratrol, We do not know if it is 99% pure. There is no muscadine grapes. Finally, lots of “other ingredients” that we do NOT want in the best resveratrol supplements.

5. Do they have a Finished Product ORAC Test to Back up their Claims?

Many resveratrol supplements make claims about having very high antioxidant levels and ORAC scores. The best resveratrol supplements will offer proof. You want to see an ORAC test done on the finished supplement – not just the raw ingredients.

6. Is the Resveratrol Supplement Made from Pesticide Free Sources?

The best resveratrol supplements will be completely pesticide free and offer proof of this fact. Pesticides are not only harmful, they also change the nutrient content of fruits. Fruits that are sprayed with pesticides will have lower antioxidant levels and less positive nutrients.

7. Is It All Natural and Free of Animal Products?

Resveratrol can come from a number of different sources, the best sources of resveratrol are all natural. Ideally, you want to find a resveratrol supplement that is made with all natural ingredients and free of animal products. Beware of products that list gelatin as an ingredient – as gelatin is made from pigs.

8. Do they Offer a Money Back Guarantee and a Consumer Bill of Rights?

In the end, the best resveratrol supplements are made by companies that completely believe in their products and stand behind them with a 100% Money Back Guarantee. You should be able to return an empty bottle and still get a full refund.

You also need to be very careful about auto-shipment programs, membership programs and “free trials” – as these are all signs of a low quality resveratrol supplement. To protect yourself, buy from a company that has a written Consumer Bill of Rights so you know exactly what will happen once you place your order.

9. Can You Talk to A Knowledgeable Customer Service Representative?

You are going to be putting this supplement in your body, you have the absolute right to call the company, ask questions and get intelligent answers. The best resveratrol supplements will have toll free numbers where you can call with any questions.

Armed With These Questions – Find the Best Resveratrol Supplements

By asking the above questions, you should be able to find the best resveratrol supplements on the market. We love the Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol, and we highly recommend it as the best resveratrol supplement – but by using the above questions you can do your own research and make your own informed decisions.

More questions from our readers…

“Hi – I was looking at Muscadine Grape supplement in the store and in the other ingredients they have Magnesium Stearate. What is this?”

Great question! No – you definitely do NOT want magnesium stearate in your muscadines. Magnesium stearate is a flowing agent that is often added to supplements. Magnesium stearate has absolutely no benefits to the end user. The only benefit is to the manufacturer – who can produce capsules faster if they use the magnesium stearate.

Are there Any Negatives to Mixing Muscadine Grapes and Magnesium Stearate?

There can be. Magnesium stearate can be made from saturated animal fat – not exactly what you want in your diet. It can also be made from corn or soy – which is probably Genetically Modified – again not what you want in your muscadine supplement.

Our friends at PowerSupplements.Com have a great article on Magnesium Stearate -

Why 90% of the Acai and Resveratrol Supplements on the Market May be Genetically Modified!

Go With A Magnesium Stearate Free Muscadine Supplement

We have been receiving a lot of questions on muscadines over the last few weeks and we love it! Keep the questions coming in – we want to know what is on your mind.

One of the common questions we get is – “Why Are Muscadine Grapes Better Than Red Grapes?” This is a great question, so let’s dig a little deeper…

Muscadine Grapes – A Red Grape And So Much More

Red Grapes are terrific – a nice source of resveratrol and countless other polyphenols. In short, Red Grapes are a terrific fruit with strong health properties. However, what if you could eat a grape that had everything that Red grapes have – plus so much more? The Muscadine Grape is that grape. Muscadines have all the polyphenols that red grapes have, plus the following…

40x The Antioxidants of Red Grapes

6x the Resveratrol of Red Grapes

More Fiber than Oat Bran

The Only Grape to have Ellagic Acid

So, the question is not what is wrong with red grapes, rather it is what is so right with muscadine grapes! There is a similar situation with the acai berry as compared to blueberries. Again, blueberries are great, but Acai has so much more than blueberries.

Make Sure You Get the Right Muscadine Grapes!

If you want to try muscadines, you want to make sure you find a product that is made with the whole muscadine fruit – muscadine seed, muscadine pulp and muscadine skin. You also want to make sure that the muscadine grapes have not been treated with pesticides.

We have found that the Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol is the best source of muscadine grapes on the market. Even if you are not interested in their product – check out the muscadine articles on their site – it is the best research we have seen on muscadine grapes and resveratrol.

Recently we have received a large number of emails asking about Resveratrol side effects . It seems that many people using Resveratrol supplements have suffered from an upset stomach and diarrhea. In asking a few more questions, it turns out these people were using a 50% Trans-Resveratrol Supplement. The problem is not the Resveratrol, but the Emodin!

Beware of the Emodin Hidden in Resveratrol Supplements

Emodin is a substance found in Giant Knotweed and it can cause diarrhea and stomach issues. Resveratrol is often made from Giant Knotweed, and if the resveratrol is just 50% Trans-Resveratrol, that means you are getting emodin in your supplement. If you want to avoid emodin (which we strongly advise), then you should stick with a 99% Trans-Resveratrol supplement like the Perfect ResGrape. The Perfect ResGrape is completely free of emodin.

Does Pure Resveratrol Have Any Side Effects?

There are no long term human clinical studies on resveratrol supplements to test if there are any long term side effects. If you are looking for a study that can guarantee that resveratrol supplements will be side effect free over the long term – you will not find one. Scientist have done animal toxicity tests on Resveratrol and found it to be safe, even at very high dosage.

Here is a quote from WebMD on the potential side effects of Resveratrol –

“So far, studies have not discovered any severe side effects, even when resveratrol is taken in large doses. However, resveratrol supplements might interact with blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin), and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen, increasing the risk for bleeding.”

What is Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol?

We have been receiving a lot of questions about what we think is the best way to get Muscadine Grapes and Resveratrol into your diet. For a while the answer involved taking at least 2 supplements – one to give you whole food muscadine and another to give you 99% Trans-Resveratrol. Now, with Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol you just need to take one supplement and you get the benefits of both Trans-Resveratrol and Muscadine Grapes!

Here is exactly what you get with the Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol -

As you can see it has just two ingredients – 99% Trans-Resveratrol and Whole Food Muscadine Grapes (this means you get muscadine skins, muscadine seeds and muscadine pulp).

How Does Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol Compare to Other Resveratrol Supplements?

This really is like getting two supplements in one. We used to take a supplement that was just 800mg of Muscadine and had no added resveratrol. Now, we just take the Perfect ResGrape – it is less expensive and even higher quality than what we were using (they certify an ORAC of over 7,000 per serving and no pesticides are used).

Here are some of the highlights of the Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol:

Muscadines have 6 times the resveratrol of red grapes, 40 times more antioxidants, more fiber than oat bran and contain the powerful antioxidant – Ellagic Acid. With all the excitement over the incredible health benefits of muscadine grapes, it is no surprise that companies are rushing to the market with various muscadine supplements.

Not All Muscadine Supplements Are Created Equal

When shopping for a muscadine supplement you want to make sure you are getting a supplement that uses the whole Muscadine Grape – muscadine skin, muscadine pulp and muscadine seed. Muscadines have different nutrients in each part of the grape, so using a supplement that uses all 3 parts of the grape is the only way to get the full health benefits of the muscadines.

Quick CheckList When Shopping for Muscadine Grape Supplements

Here are some things to look for when shopping for Muscadine Supplements:

Supplement should contain the whole muscadine grape – skin, pulp and seed

Muscadine must not be treated with pesticides – this reduces the resveratrol content

Muscadines should be dried without any harmful drying agents

Supplement should be pure – no fillers, flowing agents or other ingredients

Company should offer a 100% Money Back Guarantee

You can do your own research, but we strongly recommend the Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol – it is by far the best muscadine and resveratrol supplement we have seen.

Muscadine Wine is very popular in the South East USA – but less so in the rest of the country. Traditional Muscadine wine has been very sweet and real wine drinkers did not consider it a “true wine”.

Muscadine Wine Goes Mainstream

Today the muscadine grape is becoming much more mainstream. After the positive studies done on Muscadine Grapes and prostrate cancer by the National Institute of Health (NIH) there has been incredible interest in the muscadine grape. The muscadine grape is the only grape that contains Ellagic Acid and this may explain why it has such tremendous health benefits.

Muscadine Grapes and Resveratrol

The muscadine grape has more Trans-Resveratrol than any other type of grape. If you are looking for a good natural source of Trans-Resveratrol, then you really can’t do better than Muscadine Wine.

The Muscadine Wines being produced today rival those of the vineyards in Calafornia. So why not grab a glass of Muscadine Wine and drink to your health!

Muscadine grapes have high levels of antioxidants and resveratrol – but what makes the Muscadine super is its complete nutritional profile. In this post we will look at one of the more interesting components of the Muscadine Grape – Ellagic Acid.

Muscadine Grapes – An Incredible Source of Ellagic Acid

Ellagic Acid is a polyphenol antioxidant found in numerous fruits and vegetables including raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, walnuts, pecans, pomegranates and other plant foods. Notice how the above defenition did not list grapes? This is because most grapes do not have much Ellagic Acid. Muscadine Grapes are unique in that they are the only grape with a significant amount of Ellagic Acid!

Okay, but what is Ellagic Acid Good For?

There are numerous studies underway examing the role ellagic acid can play in cancer prevention. Ellagic acid may aide in chemoprevention. Chemoprevention is a term that means to chemically prevent cancer from occurring, growing or metastasizing. There is great interest in chemoprevention (not to be confused with chemotherapy) because it may be the best way to fight cancer, stop it from growing before it reaches a level that causes problems.
